Monthly meeting – Ed Isaacs

Ring Road Eagle by Ed Isaacs
Ring Road Eagle by Ed Isaacs

Ed Isaacs, president of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA), visited us and gave a fascinating account of how he became an artist whilst working as a building consultant. A large amount of travelling around the country for work, staying away from home and waiting for meetings gave Ed time in his hands. To occupy himself, he picked up a sketchbook and pencil to draw the world around him. This led to a passion for drawing progressing on later to using ink and coloured pencils. This then led to him drawing in a much larger scale with many of his pictures being over 2m x 1.4m. Ed bought along several of his most recent sketchbooks for us to vies. These were filled with superb drawings of a very wide variety of everyday subjects – buildings, cars, petrol stations, views from windows, street scene to name but a few. These were much admired by his audience for their detail and accurate perspective!

Ed was asked how he chose where to start a sketch. He gave us a quick 10 minute demonstration of how to structure a drawing by outlining a sketch of the corner of the room which featured a door and piano. We were all fascinated by what he demonstrated and the outline drawing can be seen below along with a reference photo of the corner of the room
